We are currently learning about Theodore Roosevelt in Social Studies. The students have learned that President Roosevelt developed his interest in nature, animals, and plants as a young boy. Spurred by this interest, TR and his friends began their very own miniature Natural History Museum.
With the blustery winter weather.... here is a reminder regarding inclement weather procedures to all students and parents:
The school district staff listens to the weather forecasts. The director of transportation tests the road conditions on our bus routes beginning at 3:30-4 a.m. We also contact the local law enforcement about road conditions. We must give careful consideration to the most dangerous bus routes in the district. So, even if it looks clear on your street, dangerous conditions may exist in other parts of our district.
The safety of all Cobb County children is our primary concern in making our decision. In deciding whether children will be safe, we look at the following factors:
The superintendent of schools is responsible for the final decision, based on the above factors and recommendations from the district staff.
The decision is made by 5:30 a.m., except in the situations when inclement weather may force school closings during the school day, so that radio and TV stations can be notified.
When the decision is made to close school, details will be posted immediately on the school district web site. Additionally, the school district will begin notifying parents using the automated calling system, but that process may take up to three hours to complete. The District also provides closing information to local news media outlets, including:

WHAT IF SCHOOL CLOSES DURING THE DAY?
Each classroom teacher has an inclement weather form on file for all homeroom students. If school closes during the day all students will be sent home on their regular bus or daycare van unless other directions are on specified on a student's form. The After School Program will be cancelled also. Please be aware that it is impossible for the school staff to accept phoned in directions under such circumstances.
Parents can sign up with the school system to receive Emergency Alerts by texting "CCSD" to 84700.

In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, we will be studying Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Sacagawea. To end the unit, the students will be going on a
VOYAGE of DISCOVERY on Friday, November 11.
The First Grade teachers are busy planning for this event and will need parents that would be willing to come in and SET UP STATIONS the day before the event. We will also need several parents to act as VOYAGE LEADERS or STATION GUIDES the day of the voyage.
