Math Lesson:  Dividing for 3-digit quotients.  Homework six problems on lined paper  1.  455/3   2.  954/6   3.  821/5   4.  946/3    5.  781/2   6.  926/4  (the students had about 15-20 minutes of class time to work on these problems.  Many of the students are finished but they had to bring it home since it is assigned as homework)

READING:  Bunnicula homework - completed journal due Wednesday; do not do the last two pages.  The wordsearch is for fun but it does not have the word "Monroe".  Come in Wednesday with your combination character developed.

Red Ribbon Week - tomorrow - wear boots to "give drugs the boot".  We have PE so please bring tennis shoes as well.

Conference Week:  Thank you to all of you for coming in for conferences.  I love the opportunity to brag about your children.  I am so very proud of each of them on their first quarter of 4^th grade.  As I mentioned in the conference, please feel free to contact me if you ever feel the need to conference again.

UPCOMING TESTS  Wordly Wise #4 on Wednesday

Explorer’s Project:  The students should be well into their research for their explorer.  All that should be left to complete at home will be writing the essay, writing the short letter to the queen, and getting the pictures.  Unless Mrs. Boham has spoken to you about essay modifications, essays should be 4-5 paragraphs; 1-introduction 2-early life (may not have much information) 3-exploration/travels/what he found  4-the effects of his exploration  5- conclusion.  Please don’t make the essays longer than one typed page.

Health  Mrs. Matson will begin the new health unit “Drugs and Medicine” next week.  This will be the health grade for the 2^nd quarter.

Math  The students have begun the 2^nd quarter of math possibly with a different math teacher (maybe not).  Math right now consists of extending division.  We will be extending the long division to 2-digit divisors.

3.  Some kids were going to the pumpkin patch.  Four kids went on the hay ride and 7 were left to pick pumpkins.  Write an equation that shows this story.  (k - 4 = 7)

Lesson:  pop quiz on division procedures.  Expanding division to 3-digit dividend by 1-digit divisor divisor

MATH:  Division steps (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Compare, Bring down) our mnemonic is Does Mcdonald's Sell Cheese Burgers

Monday and Tuesday's lessons consisted of two-digit dividends by one-digit divisors;  Monday's lesson had one number in the quotient, but today's lesson extended the repeating steps so that each quotient has two digits.  Rosenfeld Rules:  1.  before you do anything else, draw a line in the quotient area above each digit in the dividend;  2.  use a "cover up" so that all columns are covered except the one you are working with; 3. rewrite the divisor for each layer of steps; 4. check using the inverse operation; 5. circle the product in your checking and the dividend in the original division problem

We have reached the end of the first quarter.  Can you believe it.  Conference week is the week of Oct 24.   Conference schedule forms came home today in the brown envelope.  Please return them ASAP.  Remember that school is out 2 hours early during conference week.

 Please come visit us during the International Festival.  Sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun.  Tomorrow beginning at 4:00.

 MATH:  All the classes will be preparing to take the end of the quarter post test which will be cumulative from the 9 weeks.  We have covered place value, rounding, some basic algebra, multiplication and concepts of division.

 READING;  We are about half way through Bunnicula and will finish just in time for Halloween.  We learning about organizational structure (main idea/detail; chronological; question/answer; problem/solution; cause/effect; descriptive) as well as using text and graphic features to help us understand what we read.  Wordly Wise #3 test tomorrow.

 WRITING:  We have officially finished our unit on descriptive writing but we will certainly be doing some more.  Make sure you check out our essay and poetry when you come for conference.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Native cultures are about to be effected by the Europeans!   Our explorer’s unit is next.
