Making Connections in Target!

Research shows that academically talented students ought to be able to choose a subject to investigate, to formulate methods of inquiry, gather information, and develop ways for storing information. In order to help our students develop research skills and an excitement for learning, we will continue our Independent Study. Picking a topic to research will help encourage independent thinking and self motivated learning. This 9-week grading period, Independent Study can be on any topic of interest to the student. It’s a time for the children to delve into a topic that interests them and is above and beyond what they are learning in school. This should not be a subject they are already studying in school. It is designed to be an exciting and new exploration.

The student will get to research and gather information about their topic at home.  We are NOT asking for a written report.   This is a time for the students to share their knowledge with their classmates in an oral presentation form.  A creative visual should accompany the presentation.  The students must prepare and practice their presentation at home.  Note cards must be written and can be used, but a report should not be read. (A rule of thumb: 3-5 minute presentation.)  Each student must record 3 different resources used when researching.  (Goggle is not a resource.  It is a search engine).  The requirements will be reviewed in class and a rubric will be handed out.

Your child will have the opportunity to choose a date to present their report by signing up on the sign-up sheet in class.  This date will be written on their Target Tally.  One week before the report is due, the students will fill out their evaluation/reflection sheet at home.  We are stressing the importance of citing 3 or more resources.  Your child should bring the sheet back to school on the day of the oral presentation.

As parents and teachers, our roles will be catalysts, providing assistance and guidance, and most of all encouragement!

Sincerely,

Rhonda Ennever and Julie Hunter

J Have fun exploring interests!!

Weekly Target Tally

Target students come to the Resource class once a week on their designated day.

Each student will bring home a weekly Target Tally containing our unit outline, mnemonics, evaluations, assignments, and more.  Parents should review this Tally with their child and sign it each week.
